Artist's Comments

this is listed as "digital darkroom", but i actually created it in a traditional darkroom and used my wife's digital camera to transfer it to a digital file so i could upload it. (it was matted, and the scanner didn't like it that way.)

this was the result of an afternoon in the darkroom my senior year. i actually got the idea from a Jerry Ulesman photo of a similar magnitude where he was able to create a 3 dimentional square from a two dimentional negative. i opted for a 3 dimentional pyramid instead so as not to copy his idea entirely. i just mainly wanted to see if i could figure out how he did it, and this is the result!

very nice!
i wish i cold be more critical of this... as i don't know how to help on this one... it's very creative. and this technique sounds like it could be very interesting to try out.. i'm still trying to figure out exactly how you did it...

very expressive, very nice! =)

i used matte board to cut out the overall shape. then i cut that shape into 3 pieces (4 if you count the shadow at the bottom). when i went into the darkroom, i laid the matte board on my photo paper minus the 4 pieces. i exposed for a certain length of time (i think it was 5 seconds). then i put in the first piece of the puzzle, and exposed for that length of time again. then i put the second piece in, again exposing for another length of time. at that point, i had the shape of my pyramid, because i had three levels of density in the overall shape. the next thing i did was pull the negative carrier out and "flash" the remaining piece (the shadow) to get it to register as totally black. that's how i did it. thanks for the comment!!

Very original idea. Great traditional photography. I think it's an interesting idea, manipulating traditional photography within a geometric shape. I guess the only thing I can say is perhaps shapening that shape so it's more 3D, more personality besides the superimposed photo. Maybe some experimentation with subtle digital design for the background?

Yup, nice work, and the explanation given, does help to outline the process behind its creation. Good stuff. =D
